Carol Jean Mercer

December 31, 1946 — September 10, 2023

Carol J. Mercer, longtime resident of Arlington and Hutchinson, KS. passed away on September 10, 2023 in Newton, KS. after a long illness.  Born on December 31, 1946, in Pepin, WI, she was the oldest daughter of Molly and Clark Mercer.  The family eventually settled in Arlington, KS., with Carol attending Arlington Grade School and Arlington High School, graduating in 1964.  In high school, Carol particularly enjoyed the arts and competitive speech competitions.

Shortly thereafter, she married Paul R. Linscheid of Arlington, KS., and they had two daughters, Joy and Andrea. In 1979, they moved to Hutchinson, where Carol remained until 2021. 

Carol loved to create and enjoyed being a homemaker.  Whether it was a new recipe, baking bread, writing a song, quilting or sewing, Carol quickly became known for her expertise in these areas and often did sewing and tailoring contract work for various individuals or companies. 

When not busy working, Carol enjoyed watching movies, camping, attending church and volunteering for various organizations and her children’s school(s).  “I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.”  Psalms 91:2.       

Visitation will be held at Broadway Colonial Funeral Home, 120 E. Broadway, Newton, KS  67114 on Monday, September 18th, 2023 from 10:00 a.m.-11:00 a.m., followed by a funeral service from 11:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.  Burial will occur immediately after the service and will be held at Arlington Township Cemetery in Arlington, KS., at approximately 1:30 p.m.

Carol is survived by her former husband, Paul R. Linscheid of N. Newton, KS., and their children, Joy Linscheid of Brooklyn, NY.; Andrea (Fernando) Ortiz of Winfield, IL.; her beloved granddaughters: Emily Tharp, Alison Nolan, Sofia Ortiz and Kaitlyn Ortiz; her sister, Donna (Craig) Branscom of Turon, KS.; Her brothers Tom Mercer and Vernon Mercer of Hutchinson, KS.; several nieces and nephews, several great nieces and nephews, and one great-grandchild.

She is preceded in death by: her parents, Clark and Molly Mercer of Arlington, KS., and son-in-law, David Nolan, of New York, NY.
