Carolyn Ann Vermilyea, 83, died Saturday (June 12, 2021) at the Schowalter Villa in Hesston, Ks.
She was born on March 16, 1938 in Hiawatha, Kansas, the daughter of Paul and Anna Keup Duesing. Carolyn was the Valedictorian of her graduating class of Hamlin High School.
As a single mother, she moved to Newton in 1968 and worked very hard to support her family. For a short time, Carolyn did the Commodity reports on KJRG-AM Radio in Newton, later becoming a substitute mail carrier for the Newton Post Office. This would eventually become a full time job of yearly 20 years, retiring in 1998.
Shortly after moving to Newton, Carolyn became a member of Zion Lutheran Church where she was very active. Carolyn did a lot of volunteer work in the community as well. She also enjoyed doing genealogy and was an avid reader.
Survivors include her sons Stephen and Paul both of Newton, and Alan and his wife Anita of Walton; daughter Nancy McFarlane and husband Robert of Altoona, Iowa; brother Wesley Duesing and wife Linda of Hiawatha, Kansas; sisters Joyce Goodwin and husband Bill of Syracuse, N.Y., and Grace Klaassen and husband Vernon of Sedgwick, Ks.; five grandchildren Evan Vermilyea, Ben McFarlane, Hannah McFarlane Jean, Lenae Vermilyea, and Madison Vermilyea; and four great grandchildren Paisley Jean, Emmett Jean, Liam Vermilyea and Hayden Vermilyea.
Memorial services will be held at 1:00 P.M., Thursday (June 17, 2021) at the Zion Lutheran Church in Newton.
There will be no visitation as cremation has taken place.
A memorial has been established with the American Diabetes Association and the Alzheimer’s and Related Disorders Association, contributions may be sent to Broadway Colonial Funeral Home, 120 E. Broadway, Newton, Ks. 67114.
