Charlie Smith, 80, died Thursday (August 3, 2017) at his home in Newton surrounded by members of his family.
He was born on March 11, 1937 in Washington, Louisiana, the son of Bae and Mattie Chaney Campbell. Charlie was raised and attended schools in Louisiana. He married Mary Catherine Edwards on December 26, 1962 in Rosa, Louisiana.
They moved to Newton, Kansas in 1962. Charlie worked for the Santa Fe Railroad as a welder for many years, retiring in 2003.
Charlie and Mary owned and operated the C & S BBQ later changing it to the Mardi Gras Restaurant for several years in Newton until 2007.
He was a member of the Chisholm Trail Church of Christ in Wichita. Charlie loved to sing and was a part of several singing groups including The Gospel Truth.
Survivors include his wife Mary of the home; son Eric Charles Smith of Wichita; daughters Mattie Louise Smith and Cathy Marie Smith both of Houston, Tx., and Irma Loraine Jack of Dallas, Tx.; brothers Benny Campbell of Houston, Aljy Campbell and Louis Campbell, Jr. both of Beaumont, Tx.; sisters Ruby Dalcour and Ida Rideau both of Houston; eight grandchildren; and two great grandchildren.
Charlie is preceded in death by his father Bae Campbell; mother Mattie Walker; brothers, Sidney Campbell, Peter Campbell, Raymond Campbell, Edward Campbell, Willie Campbell, Ernest Campbell; and sisters Cora Jackson, Juanita Monney, and Mary Smith.
The casket will be open at Broadway Colonial Funeral Home in Newton where friends may call Saturday (August 5, 2017) between 10:00 A.M. and 5:00 P.M.
His Home Going Ceremony will be later in Louisiana with interment in the St. Luke Baptist Church Cemetery in Marrow, Louisiana.
