Dennis H. Walker

Dennis Homer Walker, 78, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday (May 8, 2014) at his Newton home.

He was born on April 17, 1936 in Newton, to Aurora E. and Florence R. (Stubblefield) Walker. Dennis was a long time member to Hall’s Chapel A.M.E. Church in Newton. On June 23, 1957, he married Sylvia J. Rossiter in Newton. She preceded him in death on October 30, 1993.

Dennis graduated from Newton High School in 1954. He was employed by Kansas Gas Service for almost 30 years, as a serviceman before retiring in 1998. He worked part-time for Wray Roofing and White Wing Construction. He volunteered at the Historical Society, Habitat for Humanity, Meals on Wheels and on the board of the Newton Housing Authority.

He enjoyed fishing, traveling, reading his bible daily, visiting with those who were unable to get out, listening to gospel and jazz music, all sports, especially football and basketball, and spending time with his grandchildren. Dennis’ Newton grandchildren, Savannah, Tjaden and Andrew, were able to spend the greatest amount of time with him. Throughout his life, he valued his relationship with God and his family.

Survivors include three sons, Scott Walker of Newton, Dennis P. (Debra) Walker of Carrollton, Tx., and Vincent (Laurie) Walker of Sacramento, Ca., one daughter, Robin (Sammie) Simmons of Newton. Dennis also had 14 grandchildren, Ashleigh Windle, Dominique, Dene’, Denicia and DJ (Dennis P., Jr.) Walker, Chea Tara Franklin, Tory Roberson, Varie, Labraeah, Maslin and Laniah Walker, Savannah, Tjaden and Andrew Simmons; and three great grandchildren, aunt Mae Davis, numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Family preceding him in death were his parents; his wife; mother and father-in-law, Edythe and Patrick Rossiter, his brother, Earl O. Walker; three sisters, Joyce-Jean Franklin, Jacqueline Cotten and his twin sister, Darlene Scott.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M., Saturday (May 17, 2014) at the First Mennonite Church, 429 East 1st, Newton.

Friends may call at the funeral home Friday, May 16th, between 1:00 and 8:00, where the family will receive friends between 5 and 6:30.

A memorial has been established with the American Heart Association, First Mennonite Church, and Hall’s Chapel A.M.E. Church, contributions may be sent to Broadway Colonial Funeral Home, 120 E. Broadway, Newton, Ks. 67114.
