Dr.Andrew Nachtigall, 87, died July 30th, at the Presbyterian Manor in Newton, KS. He was born December 9, 1928 to John and Matilda Hofer Nachtigall in Freeman, SD, the 3rd of four children.
He graduated from Freeman High School, Tabor College and Kansas University School of Medicine (1959). Andrew was board certified in Pediatrics in 1971. He worked at the Bethel Clinic in Newton, Kansas beginning in 1964 and entered retirement in 1995.
On December 26, 1958 he married Adena Doerksen. She died September 2, 1997. They had four children; Andrew Michael, Mark, Marie and Karen.
After his graduation from medical school, Andrew and Adena, a registered nurse, served with the Mennonite Central Committee in a medical capacity in Indonesia for three years.
Andrew was a committed Christian from his youth serving his church and volunteering with local charitable organizations. These included the homeless shelter, Heartland Pregnancy Care Center, CASA Child Advocacy agency, Health Ministries and was a member of Kiwanis civic club.
Andrew was preceded in death by his parents and two siblings, Alfred Nachtigall and Alice Ulrickson.
He is survived by his four children and their families; Andrew Michael (Melinda) and Adam, Lora & Hannah, Hesston; Mark (Kathy) and Elizabeth, John & Daniel, McPherson; Marie Nachtigall, Newton; Karen (Mark) Stahl and William and Ann, Kokomo, Indiana; his sister, Mary Graber, Goessel; many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Thursday, August 4, 2016 from 1:00-8:00 P.M. with the family greeting friends from 5:00-6:00 P.M.
Burial will be held Friday, August 5, 2016 at 10:30 A.M. at Greenwood Cemetery, Newton, KS.
Memorial Services will be held on Friday at 3:00 P.M, at Koerner Heights Church of The Mennonite Brethren.
