Eldon Eugene Akers, age 87 died Sunday August 15, 2021 at Newton Presbyterian Manor, Newton, KS.
He was born on November 6, 1933 in Newton, KS to Lawrence and Evelyn (Marsh) Akers. He married Marian Ruth Orpin on June 24, 1953 and they were married for 68 years. They loved playing cards and played rummy daily and the loser had to do the dishes.
He is survived by his wife Marian of the Manor, son Todd (Patrice) Akers, daughter Deborah Akers-Hurley. Grandchildren: Lynn Hurley, Holly Hurley (Justin Jones), Kelsey Akers, Madison (Kai) Starwalt, Joshua Akers, Ashley Akers (Noah Schmidt), Megan Akers (Hunter Kerr), Ian Akers. Greatgrandchildren: Tanner and Tate Starwalt.
Eldon was a member of the Newton Masonic Lodge where he was a 33rd Degree Mason (Shriner) for over 50 years. Eldon retired from Westar after 38 years of service as a foreman. He was a basketball and football referee for 25 years. In his free time, he enjoyed playing golf, hunting and fishing. He also enjoyed coaching his children’s sports teams and attending their events. He loved spending time with his kids, grandkids and great grandkids.
Preceding him in death were his parents, brothers James and Kenneth and son Michael.
Private family graveside service will be Tuesday, August 17, 2021 at Greenwood Cemetery.
Broadway Colonial Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
