Esther Elvira (Pitts) Beard, 93, homemaker, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday (February 5, 2015) at the Schowalter Villa in Hesston, Ks.
A lifelong Newton resident, she was born on September 27, 1921 to Wilbur and Gertrude Pitts in Manhattan, Ks. Esther lived a short while in Emporia, Ks., before moving to Newton where she met married William H. Beard, Sr., in 1942.
She was a member of Halls Chapel A.M.E. Church in Newton where she was pianist for many years. Esther gave great enjoyment to those who heard her play and sing hymnals. She had belonged to the Eastern Star for many years as well.
Esther is survived by sons Watson E. Beard of Newton, Robert K. Beard of Los Angeles, Ca., and Ted L. Beard and wife Shirley of Kent, Wa.; one daughter Janet M. Beard of Newton; six grandchildren; four great grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Beard is preceded in death by her parents; husband; four sons; two daughters; six brothers; and two sisters.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M., Wednesday (February 11, 2015) at the Broadway Colonial Funeral Home. Interment will be in the Greenwood Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home Tuesday between 1pm and 8pm, and Wednesday 9am til service time.
A memorial has been established with the Schowalter Villa of Hesston, contributions may be sent to Broadway Colonial Funeral Home, 120 E. Broadway, Newton, Ks. 67114.
