Florence Allison, 100, of Newton, died Monday (April 20, 2009) at Asbury Park in Newton.
Florence was born on May 24, 1908 in Wellington, Ks., the daughter of Charles and Effie Smiley Myers. She was raised in the Wellington area, graduating from Wellington High School. She married John Whomans in 1928, they were later divorced. She moved to Newton in 1940.
Florence married Detmer Hugh Allison in September, 1942 in Newton. They had lived in Elmdale, Ks. and Walton, Ks. before moving back to Newton. She provided day care in her home for over 40 years and was known to many children through the years as “Grandma Allison.”
Survivors include her children: Robert Whomans and his wife Mary Ann of Newton, Paul Whomans of Newton, Marjorie Keazer and husband Curtis of Newton, Rose Allison and husband Nick Kyle of Carthage, Mo., Maxine O’Neill and spouse Lynn Auernheimer of Goessel, Lee Allison and wife Judy of Newton, Howard Allison and wife Becky of Newton, and Arthur “Tree” Allison and wife Sandi of Newton; 24 grandchildren; 24 great grandchildren; and 11 great-great grandchildren.
Florence is preceded in death by her parents; husband Detmer Allison; and one brother Frank Myers.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M., Thursday (April 23, 2009) at Faith Mennonite Church in Newton with Pastor Gordon Smith officiating. Interment will be in the Greenwood Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home Wednesday 1pm til 9pm, where the family will receive friends 6pm til 8pm.
A memorial has been established with Caring Hands Humane Society of Newton, contributions may be sent to Broadway Colonial Funeral Home, 120 E. Broadway, Newton, Ks. 67114
