Frances Gomez, 95, of Newton, passed away in the afternoon of March 28, 2025.
Frances was born May 11, 1929 in Newton, Kansas, to Jesus and Ventura “Terrones” Nunez. She married Lou Gomez Sr. on June 19, 1948, in Newton at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church. They were married 65 years before his death on April 1, 2014.
In her younger years, she worked at a potato chip factory in Newton. Later, she worked at Northview Developmental Services for 25 years. She was a devoted member of the Catholic Church, where she was a founding member of a group making prayer blankets, an active member of the Altar Society and a communicant for Our Lady of Guadelupe. She also volunteered for the Special Olympics and at New Hope Shelter in Newton. Family was important to Frances, and she could be found spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren at her home, where she also enjoyed spending time with cats she adopted throughout the years.
Frances was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Lou; brothers Max and Aurelio “Willie” Nunez, and two sisters, Vita Sanchez and Isabel Alanzo; sons Lou Gomez Jr. and Gilbert Gomez; and great-granddaughter Hailey Porter.
Frances is survived by children Victoria Adame (Frank) and Ventura Porter (Warren). Her grandchildren include Kisha Slay (Eric), Chris Gomez, Matt Patton (Leslie), Nicole Pagoyo (Paa), Lina Unruh (Michael), Jeffrey Porter, Jennifer Porter, Andrea Porter, Sarah Keller (Mike), Scott Porter (Jennifer), and Emily Porter (Grant Kohlmeier). Great-grandchildren include Hunter Slay, Chase Slay, Ryder Slay, Francesca Slay, Rubi Patton, Maddox Kaawa, Maeva Kaawa, Heath Unruh, Ellis Unruh, Warren D. Porter, Victor Keller and Walter Keller.
A Rosary service will be at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 2, 2025 at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Newton, Kansas. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 10 a.m. Wednesday. Interment will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery.
Memorials may be given to Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church and to New Hope Shelter.
