Fred W. Puttroff, Sr.

December 13, 1926 — January 25, 2013

Fred William Puttroff, Sr., 86, of Newton, died Friday (January 25, 2013) at the Via Christi Regional Medical Center-St. Francis Campus in Wichita.

He was born on December 13, 1926 in Newton, the son of Fred Merrill and Lucille Marie Blevins Puttroff. He attended Newton schools where he graduated in 1943.

After high school Fred went to work for the Santa Fe Railroad for a short time before joining the U.S. Army. After being discharged from the military, Fred returned to working for the Santa Fe Railroad in Newton for 45 years until his retirement.

Fred married Roberta Jean Reynolds on December 1, 1950 in Newton, they had four children. Fred and Roberta were later divorced, she died on August 2, 2004.

Fred married Edith Melzer on December 29, 1974 in Newton, they had one son. Edith died on June 12, 2001.

Fred loved spending time at his second home on Marion County Lake. He enjoyed fishing, camping, gardening and playing poker. Through the years Fred had been an active member of the Newton Elks Lodge, Newton V.F.W. Post where he a member of the honor guard for several years and had also served as State Quartermaster for the V.F.W., Fred had also been a member of the Newton American Legion.

Survivors include sons Fred W. Puttroff, Jr. of Marion, Ks., Eric Puttroff and wife M. Blair of Newton; daughters Judie Brewer and husband Ron of Newton, Karen Ryan and husband Dave of Escondido, Calif., Kelly Puttroff of McPherson, Ks.; 12 grandchildren including his longtime caretaker Kristin Brewer and her husband DeMario Smith; 18 great grandchildren; and his former daughter-in-law Jan Puttroff of Newton.

Fred is also preceded in death by his parents; two infant sons John Michael Puttroff and Phillip Gene Puttroff; an infant brother James Robert Puttroff; a brother killed in WWII, John Merrill Puttroff; and sister Alice Jewel “Judy” Wood.

Memorial services will be held at 11:00 A.M., Friday (Feb. 1, 2013) at the Broadway Colonial Funeral Home. Inurnment will be in the Greenwood Cemetery.

There will be no visitation or viewing as cremation has been effected.

A memorial has been established with the Newton V.F.W., the Marion County Fire/EMS, or The Lord’s Diner of Wichita, contributions may be sent to Broadway Colonial Funeral Home, 120 E. Broadway, Newton, Ks. 67114.
