Frieda Viola Eck

March 2, 1918 — April 15, 2015

Frieda Viola (Johnson) Eck, 97, died on April 15, 2015 at the Newton Medical Center. She was born on March 2, 1918 in Lahoma, OK, the daughter of Gertrude Maria Lizetta Penner and Benjamin J. Johnson.
On May 9, 1937 she married David P. Eck. He precedes her in death.
For many years, she was a member of the Walton Mennonite Church and active with committees, groups. For years, she was active with the ladies quilting group, and continued meeting with them once a month. After the church was closed, Frieda began attending the First Mennonite Church in Newton. Being the giving individual Frieda was, she continued sharing her time and life with the church. Frieda was active on the funeral dinner committee, serving and preparing many meals. She was active with other church committees as well, helping whenever there was a need.
During her lifetime she worked outside the home as a nurse’s aide for the Newton Presbyterian Manor and later in the housekeeping department.
Family was a very important part of Friedas’ life. Her and David farmed for many years. The grandchildren were a very special part of Frieda’s life and she spent countless hours with them. They describe her as a very loving and giving person with a passion for watermelons, strawberries and the German baked dishes.
Her survivors include a son and his wife, Merlin (Donita) Eck and daughter and husband Linda (Harold) Reimer, all of Newton; eight grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren; nieces, nephews and cousins.
Preceding her death was her husband David P. Eck, her parents, a son, Dennis LeRoy Eck; two sisters, Melinda (Johnson) Koehn and Eleanor (Johnson) Eilers; brother, Arthur Johnson.
Visitation will be Friday, April 17, 2015 at Broadway Colonial Funeral Home from 1:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. with the family greeting from 6:00 P.M .- 8:00 P.M.
Burial will be held SAT. APRIL 18, at 2:00 P.M.at the Walton Cemetery.

Memorial services will be following the burial, on SAT. at 3:00 P.M. at Broadway Colonial Funeral Home Chapel. Pastor Brandon Eck will be presiding.
