George August Breer, age 77, due to multiple health issues, passed away peaceably with family at his side on January 6, 2025 in Wichita, KS.
Junior, as he was called in his younger days, was born August 3rd, 1947 on a farmstead near Salina to parents George Joseph Breer & Lila Iona (Armbruster). He joined older siblings, Larry, Meralyn and Deloris. Though he had a difficult childhood, he was resilient, a quality he maintained throughout his life.
He graduated from Gypsum High School in 1965 and later attended fine art classes at Wichita State University. After enlisting in the National Guard his regiment was activated in 1967. He volunteered many times to go to Vietnam, but was told he was “too much like John Wayne.” In the meantime, he poured this same energy into military sports and even won the decathlon!
George married Edith Buller, and although a difficult relationship, they remained together for 31 years and had four beautiful children. After their divorce, a former relationship with Betty Stout rekindled for 5 years and brought news of an earlier son, Randy Messersmith, who shared George’s artistic talents.
Residing near Newton, KS most of his life, he was baptized there on February 7th, 1981 at Koerner Heights Church.
Over the years, George worked in numerous fields, often skilled at whatever he set his mind to do. Working a backhoe earned him fame in the state of Kansas as the best man for building underground utility or sewer system manholes. As a jack-of-all-trades he worked maintenance, residential contracting, and handyman jobs. Later, he owned and operated a lawn care business.
Beyond his professional life, George was a devoted artist and craftsman. Always active restoring or creating, he spent countless hours doing taxidermy, painting, playing guitar, designing intricate jewelry, and creating beautiful woodworking projects. When not crafting, he could often be found outdoors, embracing his love of hunting, fishing, and tending to a vibrant garden of vegetables and flowers.
His children would like to thank extended family and friends for the companionship you provided him, and the V.A. for the extensive and compassionate care you gave. He will be missed by many.
George was preceded in death by his father George Breer, mother Lila Breer Fierro, step-dad Gilbert Fierro, brother Larry Breer, and stillborn son Matthew Chase.
He leaves behind daughters Alisa (David) McCullough of Wichita and Andrea Breer of Kansas City MO; sons Caleb Breer of Piedmont OK (fiancé Danielle Bailey of Vacaville CA), Tobias (Soyeon Joo) of Parker CO, and Randy (Kathy) Messersmith of Pryor OK; grandchildren Jeffrey and Paige McCullough, Noah, Nathaniel and Gabriel Breer, Hae Joo & upcoming baby Ho-lang-ee, and Autumn, Alyssa and Adrianna Messersmith.
He is also survived by former spouse Edith (Edee) Buller-Breer of Newton and significant other Betty Stout; siblings Meralyn (Clark Helzer) Breer of Houston TX and Deloris (Gordon) Hall of Tecumseh; many relatives and friends; and Maggie, his loving German Shorthaired Pointer.
