George A. Yohn, 101, died Friday (March 18, 2022) at the Pine Village in Moundridge, Kansas.
He was born on January 16, 1921 on the family farm outside of Greensburg, Kansas, the son of Frank and Clara Tekla Tonnies Yohn. George was raised in the Greensburg and Haviland area, graduating from Greensburg High School.
He moved to Wichita and went to work at the Stearman Plant and also Boeing Aircraft. On December 7, 1943 he enlisted into the Army Air Corp, serving in the Pacific Theater. After being discharged from the military on January 19, 1946, George returned to Wichita and went to work for the Coleman Company.
He married Nelda Irene Tucker on May 18, 1946. They would move to Greensburg and George would later take over the family farm. Nelda died on September 20, 1995.
George continued farming and after retiring moved to the Newton/Moundridge area in 2015. He was a life member of the V.F.W. along with being a member American Legion in Greensburg where he was very active and a member of the Honor Guard for funerals and community events. In 2012, he was able to go on the “Honor Flight” to Washington, D.C.
Survivors include his two sons, Rex Yohn of Newton, Ks., and Terry Yohn of Blair, Nebraska; and one grandson Travis Yohn of Omaha, Neb.
George is preceded in death by his parents; wife; two brothers John and Gilbert Yohn; and three sisters Alice Ellis, Alberta Blaisdell, and Frankie Wood; and a step-brother Earl Yohn.
Private family memorial services and inurnment will take place at the Fairview Cemetery in Greensburg.
