Harold D. Wedel

Harold Daniel Wedel, 83, died Friday (Nov. 16, 2012) at the Bethesda Home in Goessel.
He was born on February 11, 1929 in Goessel, KS., the son of Martin P. and Linda (Dalke) Wedel. Harold was raised in Goessel and attended school there. Upon his graduation, he went on to earn his Business Degree from the University of Kansas, and a CLU degree. He later earned a Master’s Degree in Counseling from the University of Missouri at Kansas City. Harold was the H.R. Director for Old American Insurance in Kansas City for many years.
Harold was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving his country during the Korean Conflict. He reached the rank of Lt. Colonel in the reserves. He married Doris Mull on September 30, 1950 at the Goessel Mennonite Church. After moving to the Overland Park area they attended Indian Heights United Methodist Church.
Harold took pride in his family, known as a very caring, giving gentleman. He enjoyed sports, and was a huge KU fan. He also coached baseball, basketball, football and assisted in the development of young athletes, who later themselves became coaches of state qualifiers. He set an example for his family and friends, with his strong belief system and his faith in God, during some of the most difficult times. Harold also enjoyed singing which was a major part of his life. He sang in the church choir, with his family and also made several studio recordings with his brothers, of some of his favorite musical selections.
Survivors include his wife Doris; daughter Stephanie G. Molina of Overland Park, KS.; son Timothy K. Wedel of Overland Park; four brothers Gilbert L. Wedel of Canton, KS., Robert “Bob” Wedel of Lyons, KS., Donald “Don” Wedel of El Dorado, KS., Rodney M. Wedel of Newton; two sisters Goldie Mae McMurray,Canton, KS and Irene P..Wiebe of Spring, TX.; three grandchildren Wesley R. Molina, Casey L. Molina and Anna M. Molina.
Harold is preceded in death by his parents and brother Arnold “Arnie” C. Wedel.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, November 20, 2012 at 11:00 A.M. at Broadway Colonial Funeral Home.
Visitation will be from 8:00 A.M. to service time at the funeral home.
Interment will be in the Greenwood Cemetery.
A memorial has been established with Bethesda Nursing Home, in care of Broadway Colonial Funeral Home, 120 E. Broadway, Newton, Ks. 67114.
