Helen Louise Thomas, 87, of Newton, died Dec. 6, 2009 in Fenton, Mo.
She was born on December 10, 1921 in Salina, KS., the daughter of Otis and Fern McJilton Webb Hays. She attended schools in Newton where she graduated from high school. He later attended beauty school in Wichita.
She married Verdun L. Thomas on Sept. 30, 1941 in Newton.
Helen co-owned three beauty shops and a Merle Norman Studio. She had been a member of the First Baptist Church. Through the years she had been involved in P.TA. during her children’s school years, V.F.W. Ladies Auxillary, and volunteer with the Salvation Army. She enjoyed traveling to visit her family.
Survivors include her son Martin Thomas and his wife Beth of Emporia, Ks.; daughters Linda Rowland and her husband David of Newton, Lisa Thomas and husband John of Albuquerque, N.M., Debbie Vanderheide and husband Gerry of Fenton, Mo.; one sister Melissa Warken of Wichita, Ks.; grandchildren Ben Sweely of New York, Josh Sweely and wife Kim of Newton, Ian Vanderheide and wife Heidi of Colorado, Juli Wolf of Missouri, Pieter Vanderheide of Missouri, Tori Vanderheide of Missouri, Jill Clanton and husband Josh of Newton, Dan Rowland of Kansas City; 13 great grandchildren; her dog Chulo; and many nieces, nephews and cousins
Helen is preceded in death by her parents; husband; one brother Victor Hays; and great grandson Noah Wolf.
Memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM, Tuesday, Dec. 15, 2009 at the Broadway Colonial Funeral Home where the family will receive friend following the service. Private family inurnment will be held at Greenwood Cemetery.
A memorial has been established with the Salvation Army, Caring Hands Humane Society, or the American Cancer Society contributions may be sent to Broadway Colonial Funeral Home, 120 E. Broadway, Newton, Ks.
