Herbert A. Cies

Rev. Herbert A. Cies, 97, at his started his Heavenly journey on November 18, 2016, eager to meet his Lord, friends and family who passed on earlier. These include his parents Herbert and Florence(Furness), a brother Carol, sisters Lylith Sullivan, Mary West and Lynn Bowers, his wife Eva Lucile, his son Edwin Lee, step-son Dan Tanner, step-daughter Martha Cahal.
Herbert was born on February 23, 1919 in Wichita, Kansas. He served his country five years in the 6th Armored Division Army Tank Corps, Combat Command as a Captain in Communications in France, Germany and Luxemburg. During his tour he felt a calling to become a Pastor to help promote “peace” in homes, our nation, and the world.
After completing a B.A. degree at the University of Kansas, Herb met and married Eva Lucile Hower Tanner, who was a widow with two boys and two girls. She graduated with a B. A. degree from K.U. at the same time as him. Then Herb entered the seminary at the Iliff School of Theology in Denver, Colorado and became a United Methodist pastor.
He served churches in Vinland-Fairview, Kansas, Hugo, Windsor, and Westminster, Colorado; Torrington and Riverton, Wyoming, and Kalispell and Lewiston, Montana. He was a District Superintendent for six years in the Billings District of the Yellowstone Conference. In retirement, they lived in Idyllwild, California, where he was Vice President of the Rotary for seven years and was voted Volunteer of the Year for Idyllwild School of Arts and Music.
Herb and Eva lived their remaining years, since 1993, at Asbury Park in Newton, Kansas. He was devoted to his wife of 63 years. Herb continued to volunteer whenever he was needed. He had a knack for turning strangers instantly into friends because he looked for the good characteristics in each person. He enjoyed improvising whenever needed and strived to live each day to its full potential. Herb will certainly be missed, but long remembered by many.
Surviving family members include his step-children James Tanner of Hemet, California, and Donna Mourey and family of Newton; his own grandson, A.J. Cies; step- grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
Memorial services will be held at the Chapel of Asbury Park on Tuesday, November 22nd at 2:00 P.M.
Private family inurnment will be held at a later date, at the Sunset Lawn Cemetery in El Dorado, Kansas.
There will be no visitation or viewing as cremation has been effected.
A memorial has been established with the Asbury Park Good Samaritan Fund, contributions may be sent to Broadway Colonial Funeral Home, 120 E. Broadway, Newton, Kansas.
