Irene Annie Schmidt, 84, of Newton, died Sunday (Nov. 27, 2011) at the Presbyterian Manor in Newton.
She was born on August 14, 1927 in Peabody, Ks., the daughter of Ben and Leah Weber Larsen. Irene attended school in Peabody and enjoyed collecting newspaper clippings of the old radio songs and poems.
On May 18, 1948, she married Walter D. Schmidt in Goessel, Ks. They made their home in Newton, where she worked in the bakery at Dillons and as a kitchen aide at Presbyterian Manor.
She enjoyed making zwieback, pies, and homemade noodles for her family. Irene loved her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren very much.
Survivors include a son, Lee Warren Schmidt of Topeka; two daughters, Norma Barben of Wichita and Karen Parks of Garden City, Ks.; four grandchildren Mike Barben, Jennifer Stapp, Jason Parnell, and Amanda Elmore; and seven great grandchildren, Karen, Jacob, Paul, Charity Parnell, Addisyn Stapp, James Barben, and Simon Elmore.
Mrs. Schmidt is preceded in death by her parents; husband Walter on May 17, 1996; sister Marjorie Hett; daughter Betty Ann Hills; and grandson John Edward Barben.
Friends may call at the funeral home on Tuesday 9am til 8pm.
Private family graveside services will be held.
