Isabelle “Chavela” Gonzalez, 86, of Newton, passed away in her sleep on Thursday (August 28, 2014) at the Newton Presbyterian Manor.
She was born on October 8, 1927 in Florence, Kansas, the daughter of Francisco and Juana Puentes Gomez. Isabelle’s parents, three brothers Mitch, Trinidad and Albert, and her sister Mercedes preceded her in death.
She is survived her husband of 65 years, Daniel whom she married on June 18, 1949 in Newton; her daughter Juanita Holguin and her husband Ernesto, Sr. of Newton; son Daniel, Jr., and his wife Pamela of Wichita; son Rick Gonzalez and his wife Angela of Newton; and daughter Patricia Stallbaumer and her husband Dave of Newton; Chavela’s two sisters Phyllis Chavez of Newton and Isadora London of Huntington, Ark.; and brother John Gomez.
Her family was important to her. She was proud of her ten grandsons, Anthony Gonzalez, Ernesto Holguin, Jr., Nicholas Holguin (Katrina Hinshaw), Colby (Amber) Gonzalez, Corey (Angie) Gonzalez, Andy (Angie) Gonzalez, Taylor Gonzalez, Derek Gonzalez, Christopher (Tasha) Gonzalez, Nolan (Lisa) Pugh; and also her 14 great grandchildren.
Isabelle most enjoyed when all her family would get together and making them tortillas, she also enjoyed being outside and tending to her flowers.
Isabelle worked as a cook at the Chuck House and The Old Mill Restaurant until she retired. She enjoyed her work and the many friends she made there. She was a longtime member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church and the church’s Altar Society.
Recitation of the Holy Rosary will be said at 9:00 A.M. Tuesday (September 2, 2014) followed by the Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 A.M., both at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church.
Interment will be in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Newton.
Friends may call at the funeral home Monday 1pm til 6pm, where the family will receive friends between 2 and 4.
A memorial has been established with Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church and the Newton Area Meals on Wheels, contributions may be sent to Broadway Colonial Funeral Homes, 120 East Broadway, Newton, Ks. 67114.
