Jean Paulyne “Grandma Jean” Spain, 86, of Newton, died Tuesday (Jan. 26, 2010) at Asbury Park in Newton.
Jean was born on June 3, 1923 on a farm outside Gypsum, Kansas, the daughter of Lawrence S. “Lefty” and Elmyrah M. Hall Sloop. She graduated from Newton High School in 1943. Jean married D. Dean Bahr on September 28, 1944 in Kansas City, Kansas, the had one daughter Dean Ann. Mr. Bahr died in February, 1951.
She had worked in the meat department for Dillons for over 30 years primarily in Newton but for a few years in the 1980’s she worked at the stores in Wichita.
Jean was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Newton, the Ladies Auxillary of the V.F.W., American Legion and Eagles, she had also volunteered at the Community Center.
Survivors include one daughter Dean Ann Shelton and husband Bob of Wichita; grandchildren Craig A. Sheffler and wife Nicole of Independence, Mo., Brian K. Sheffler and wife Carma of Seguin Tx., Lisa Stinson and husband Marc of Andover, Ks., and Leslie Arce of Tempe, Az.; great grandchildren Amber, Kirkland, Georgia, Victoria, Gracie, Ethan and Alisaundra Sheffler, Cole and Kyra Stinson, Antonio, Carlos, and Josephine Arce; sister-in-laws Arlene Sloop of Shell Knob, Mo. And Barbara Sloop of Newton; several cousins; nieces and nephews; and the 81 Speedway family in Wichita.
She is preceded in death by her parents; step-mother Josephine C. “Dolly” (Richstatter) Sloop; and brothers Gilbert L. Sloop, Larry L. Sloop, and Donald L. Sloop.
Memorial graveside services will be held at 2:00 PM, Saturday (Jan. 30, 2010) at the Halstead Cemetery in Halstead, Ks.
There will be no visitation at the funeral home as cremation has taken place. Friends may sign the book Friday 9am til 5pm and Saturday 9am til Noon at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers a memorial has been established with the First United Methodist Church or Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice, contributions may be sent to Broadway Colonial Funeral Home, 120 East Broadway, Newton, KS.
