Joan Lee Rose, 84, passed away Saturday, July 4, 2015, at Newton Presbyterian Manor.
She was born on January 24, 1931 to Lee W. Onstott and Inez M. (Thalman) Onstott in Newton, KS. Joan married Richard J. Rose on January 24, 1948 at First Baptist Church of Newton. Joan was a lifelong resident of Harvey County.
Joan was raised on her parents’ farm as their only child. When she married Richard, they spent their first few years of marriage helping his parents on their farm. On March 15, 1950, their only child, a son, Dale Eugene Rose was born. A few years later, they moved to town in Newton. Joan spent most of Dale’s childhood at home, but began working as a dietary aide at Axtell Hospital after he went to high school. She worked there for several years, until the hospital merger.
Joan was a very sociable woman, part of multiple groups over the years. Even after leaving Axtell, she often gathered with the woman she had worked with for food, games, and fellowship. She also organized gatherings for her one-room schoolhouse classmates and other friend groups. Weenie roasts and homemade ice cream were part of some special memories with close family friends.
Throughout her life, Joan dearly loved animals. Her house was often filled with decorations of cardinals and other colorful birds. She invested time and energy into bird feeders so she could watch the birds come to her yard. Joan’s dogs were very important to her as well. Whether it was a trip to the bank, picking up her grandkids, or a stop at Dairy Queen, the dogs often rode along in the car and received a treat along the way.
Joan enjoyed doing crafts, cooking, and helping her family. She had close ties to her cousins, even when separated by many miles. She always ready to lend a hand to her son and daughter-in-law, Christine (Carroll) Rose, especially with her grandkids. For her parents and husband in later years, she served as a caretaker. She was a faithful daughter, loving wife, caring mother, and giving grandmother.
Joan was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and son.
She is survived by her daughter-in-law, Christine Rose, Newton; grandsons David Rose (Sara), Newton, and Micah Rose (Jordan), Lawrence, KS; granddaughter Leah Rose, Hillsboro, KS; great-granddaughter Kayin Rose, Lawrence; and great-grandson Max Rose, Newton.
