Juan Chavez, loving husband and father, went to be with our Lord on April 20, 2009. He was born in Morenci, Arizona on June 26, 1924 to Bernardo and Josepha Holguin Chavez. Juan met his future wife Estela Rosario Rodriquez in Newton, Kansas near a tree by the train station before deploying to Europe in WWII. He was awarded the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star while serving in Germany, France and Austria. He returned to Kansas to marry Estela on February 23, 1946. Juan worked for Santa Fe Rail Mill for 30 years before retiring in 1984.
Juan and Estela raised one son, Hector and his wife Cindy, and 4 daughters, Linda McDonald, Ida Solis-Hernandez and husband Alfredo, Delores Chavez and Doris Mitchell and husband Robert.
Juan enjoyed gardening, carpentry and playing the harmonica. Juan was a lifetime member of the V.F.W.
Juan is survived by his wife Estela of Moundridge, as well as sisters, Ofelia Fierro, Simona Madrigal and Olga Lopez, of El Paso, Texas.
Survived by, his joy complete with the birth of his grandchildren, Troy Solis (wife Brenda), Regina Solis-Willhight (husband Milton), Robert Mitchell, Jerrod Mitchell, and Andrea Chavez; step-grandchildren, Luke Hathaway and Ashley Sanchez. Three great grand-children, Justin Solis, Cassandra Solis, Jackson Solis, Dustin Solis-Miller, Mia Solis-Miller, and Aliana Segura; step great grand-children, Chelsey Solis, Alex Solis, Adrienne Willhight, Janay Willhight, Stefan Willhight and Bryan Willhight.
Preceding him in death are his parents, Bernardo Chavez and Joepha Holguin-Chavez, brother’s Milton Chavez, Jilberto Chavez, Eduardo Chavez, Candelario Chavez and Jose Chavez who died at birth, Isabel Hernandez, Lorenza Diaz
Visitation will be Thursday, April 23rd from 1:00-9:00 P.M. with the family greeting at 6:00 P.M. and the Recitation of the Holy Rosary to be held at 6:30 P.M. all at Broadway Colonial Funeral Home.
Funeral Mass will be held at Broadway Colonial Funeral Home on Friday, April 24th, 2009, at 10:00 A.M.
Burial will be held at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Newton, Kansas.
