Larry Neal Hanes, 75, of Newton, died Tuesday (October 19, 2021) at the Newton Medical Center.
He was born on February 8, 1946 in Emporia, Kansas, the son of Millard and Velma Mize Hanes. Larry graduated from high school in Florence, Kansas in 1964.
He married Peggy Ann Gaul on July 25, 1969 in El Dorado, Kansas.
Through the years Larry was a welder and supervisor at several machine and sheet metal businesses in Kansas and Kansas City, Mo., including Hesston Corp. While living in Strong City, Kansas, Larry and Peggy owned and operated Laron Manufacturing, doing sheet metal work. Eventually settling in Newton.
Larry loved playing golf and cards. He was an avid K.U. Jayhawks and St. Louis Cardinals fan. Larry and Peggy always enjoyed attending their grandchildren’s events.
Survivors include his wife Peggy of the home; daughter Leslie Schmidt and husband John of Emporia; three grandchildren, Logan and Jordan of Emporia, and Hayden of Manhattan; and one sister Carolyn Skinner of Joplin, Mo.
For several years, Larry and Peggy were drivers for Youthville from which they formed a special family relationship with Todd and Kellie Courson and their family of Kiowa, Ks., and Robert and Heather Clements and their family of Shawnee, Ks.
Larry is preceded in death by his parents; brothers Hubert, Robert, Kenny and Russell; and sister Norma Jean Liptau.
Cremation has taken place with no services scheduled at this time.
