Lawrence M. Quilty II, died on October 14th, 2010 at the Presbyterian Manor, with family by his side. He was born May 22, 1917, Newton, Kansas to Lawrence M. and Rachel (Arnold) Quilty.
On February 7, 1948, he married D. Jane Steinkirchner at the St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Newton, Kansas. He held a membership with the St. Mary’s Catholic Church for the duration of his lifetime. He was a 1935 graduate of Newton High School.
Lawrence worked as an Auditor with the Skelly Oil Company for 25 years before his retirement in 1973. On October 1, 1940 he was inducted into the United States Army, 127th Field Artillery with the 635th Tank Destroyer Battalion. He entered into Active Service on December 23, 1940 at Topeka, Kansas. On February of 1944 he departed from Europe. During his time in the Army he engaged in the following campaigns; Omaha Beach, D-Day, the North Central France, Rhineland, Ardennes, and the Central Europe. When the wars ended he met the Russians on the Styr River. Lawrence was discharged on October 17, 1945 in Fort Leavenworth, Kansas.
He held memberships with the V.F.W, the American Legion, and the Knights of Columbus, all of Newton, Kansas.
Survivors include a daughter, Karen (Quilty) Miller and husband Martin, Topeka, KS, 2 sons; Joseph M. Quilty and wife Janice, grandchildren Heather, Heidi and Jaime, Olathe, KS ; Lawrence Michael Quilty III and wife Helen, grandchildren, Krystin (Quilty) Sanford and husband Steve, Edgerton, KS and grandson, L. Michael IV and wife Ashley of Olathe, KS; sister, Margaret Beran of Rosemead, CA, and great-grandson, Kevin James Sanford.
Lawrence was preceded in death by his wife, D. Jane (Steinkinchner) Quilty, Mother, Rachel (Arnold) Quilty, Father Lawrence M. Quilty, and a brother, Ambrose F. Quilty.
Visitation will be held on Friday, October 22, 2010 at Broadway Colonial Funeral Home in Newton, from 1:00 P.M. to 9:00 P.M.
Recitation of the Holy Rosary will be held at the funeral home, on Friday, October 22nd, at 7:00 P.M. with Reverend James Mainzer.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, October 23rd, 2010 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, at 10:00 A.M. Reverend James Mainzer will be the celebrant.
Burial will follow at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery, Newton. Ft. Riley Honor Guard will provide military honors.
Memorials may be made to St. Mary’s Catholic Church Building Fund, in care of the funeral home.
