Lawrence L. “Tony” Spencer, 91, of Newton, Kansas, passed away on March 10, 2025. He was born on October 4, 1933, in Harvey County, Kansas, to Laurence and Alice Spencer.
Tony graduated from Newton High School and proudly served his country in the United States Army. After his service, he began a long and fulfilling career in construction, spending 42 years as a backhoe operator.
On April 10, 1955, Tony married the love of his life, Julia “Judy” (Thomas) Spencer. Together, they raised four children and built a life marked by love, hard work, and a steadfast commitment to family and friends.
Tony was a friendly and caring man—someone who never met a stranger. He was always ready to lend a helping hand, and his witty sense of humor brought joy to everyone he encountered. Breakfasts at Braum’s with his friends were a cherished tradition, and his love of vintage construction toys led him to collect and restore them well into retirement.
He is survived by his sons, Anthony (Cidera) Spencer and Dennis Spencer; his daughter, Angela (Vic) Tumwa; his brother, Marvin; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Laurence and Alice Spencer; his wife, Judy; his son, Jim; and his brothers, Forrest, Dean, and George.
Visitation will take place on Thursday, March 13, from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Broadway Colonial Funeral Home in Newton. A funeral service will be held at the same location on Friday, March 14, at 10:00 am, with interment at Sunnydale Park Cemetery afterward. A luncheon for family and friends will follow at Zion Lutheran Church.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.
Tony will be remembered for his warm heart, his ready smile, and his unwavering willingness to help a friend—qualities that continue to inspire all who knew and loved him. He will be deeply missed.
