EVA LUCILE CIES left this earth from Asbury Park in Newton, singing praises for church, loving family, caring friends and the beauty of the earth that had sustained her for 96 years on Tuesday (August 21, 2012)
Born to the Rev. S.D. and Ethel (Kemp) Hower in Hiawatha, Kansas on June 7, 1916. Following her father’s ministry, Lucile received her early education in Hanover, Bern and Jewell, graduating from Topeka High School.
While attending Butler County Community College in El Dorado, Ks., Lucile met Jack Tanner. They were married on December 1, 1935 in El Dorado. To them were born Daniel, James, Martha and Donna. Following Jack’s death in a refinery accident in July 1943, Lucile taught school at Red Top School near El Dorado, Flat Rock Childrens Home in Ohio and in Scandia, Ks.
Entering the University of Kansas in Lawrence, Lucile purchased a large home at the foot of the hill. By rooming and boarding eight male Wesley Foundation students and boarding seven female university students in addition to her four children, Lucile was able to complete her Bachelor of Science Degree in Education with honors.
While at K.U., Lucile met the Rev. Herbert A. Cies, they were married on January 27, 1949 in Lawrence. To them was born a son Edwin Lee. Following his ministry, Lucile taught in Colorado, Wyoming and Montana until her retirement in 1976.
Survivors include her husband, Rev. Herbert A. Cies of Newton; sons Daniel Tanner of Billings, Montana, James Tanner of Hemet, Calif., Edwin Cies of Belvue, Colo.; daughters Martha Cahal of Acworth, Georgia and Donna Mourey of Newton; seven grandchildren; and eight great grandchildren.
Lucile is preceded in death by her parents; brothers Paul and Bob Hower; and sister Betty Burton.
Private family services will be held later as cremation has been effected.
Memorials have been established with Asbury Park in Newton, Intermountain Home for Children in Helena, Montana and the Iliff School of Theology in Denver, Colo., contributions may be sent to Broadway Colonial Funeral Home, 120 E. Broadway, Newton, Ks. 67114.
