Lupe T. Llamas, 91, died Thursday (March 7, 2013) at Asbury Park in Newton.
She was born on May 19, 1921 in Peabody, Ks., the daughter of Jesus and Manuela Melendez Torres.
Lupe married Petronilo Jose Llamas on May 29, 1942 in Florence, Ks. They moved to Newton shortly after. Mr. Llamas died on October 15, 1993.
Through the years, Lupe had worked at Boeing Aircraft in Wichita and Hehr International. She later opened Lupe’s Carry-Out in Newton in 1977 which she operated until retiring in 1992. Her family continues to operate the restaurant.
She was a member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church and the Altar Society.
Survivors include her children Elvera Herndandez and Russell of Newton; Gloria Hernandez and Dominic of Wichita, Caroline Hansen of Newton, Mario R. Llamas and Anita of Newton, Neil A. Llamas and Julia of Newton; brothers Angel Torres of Peabody, Robert Torres of Albuquerque, N.M., sisters Carmen Vega , Esther Monares, Margaret Garcia and Jenny Garcia all of Newton; 13 grandchildren; 22 great grandchildren; and four great –great grandchildren: and numerous nieces and nephews.
Lupe is preceded in death by her parents; husband; brother Felix Torres; and step-brother Augustine Torres.
Recitation of the Holy Rosary will be said at 9:00 A.M., the Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 A.M., both on Monday (March 11, 2013) at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church. Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Newton.
Friends may call at the funeral home Sunday 1pm til 8pm, where the family will receive friends 6 til 8.
A memorial has been established with Asbury Park, Harden Hospice, and the Altar Society of the church, contributions may be sent to Broadway Colonial Funeral Home, 120 E. Broadway, Newton, Ks. 67114.
