Lydia J. Utz "L.J." passed from thi life on Friday, June 5th, 2009 in Halstead, Kansas. She was born in Great Bend, Kansas on Sept.23, 1917 to Frank E. and Lydia F. (Pratt) Long. They preceded her in death.
The family lived briefly in Scott City, Kansas and then moved to Newton, where L.J. resided until 2003 when she moved to Halstead to live with her sister, Sondra and husband, Dr. Frank H. Chesky. She entered Halstead Health and Rehabilitation in December of 2007 and resided there until her death.

On July 26th, 1938, L.J. married Max F. Utz in Hutchinson, Kansas. He preceded her in death in 1999.

L.J. loved meeting and talking to new and old friends. For many years she worked for a local optometrist. Eventually, she opened her own "L.J.'s Yarn Shoppe" in the Ripley Hotel. When it was scheduled to be torn down, she moved the shop to her home and East Broadway in Newton. She taught many Newton residents to Knit and crochet. She was especially proud of teaching several Girl Scout troops and 4-H groups variou forms of needlework. She collected character dolls and teddy bears and was a member of the Doll Club of Kansas. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and the Ladies Auxiliary of the United Transportation Union.

After moving to Halstead, she volunteered at The Neighbor's Store, a charitable resale shop.

She is survived by her sister, Sondra (husband, Frank) Chesky and nephews Robert Chesky and Tyler Chesky of Halstead and nieces, Sonya Hove (husband, Rick), Durham, North Carolina and Laurel Chesky, Austin, Texas. She is also survived by grand-nieces and grand-nephews Andre, Megan and Mark Hove and Tirzah, Devin and Willow Chesky.

A book signing will be held from 9:00 to 5:00 on Monday, June 8,at the funeral home.

Memorial Services will be on Tuesday, June 9, 2009, 2:00 P.M. at the First Christian Church, Newton. Reverend Gary Bell will be presiding.

Memorials may be made to the Caring Hands Humane Society or The Neighbor's Store, in care of the funeral home at 120 E. Broadway, Newton, KS 67114

A private family burial will be held.
