Marilyn Ruth Snyder, 97, of Newton passed away on April 1, 2025 at Paramount Community Living and Rehab.
Marilyn was born August 23, 1927 in Kansas City, Missouri to Harold and Roberta (Dabney) Fredman, the first of 2 children. The family attended Roanoke Baptist Church, where she was baptized on Easter Sunday, March 24, 1940. She graduated from Paseo High School in 1944. She then moved to Lindsborg, Kansas, to attend Bethany College, where she was an English major. In Lindsborg she met Ralph Sundquist before he left for boot camp in October. In the summer of 1946, she worked at Mariadahl Children's Home, an orphanage near Cleburne, Kansas. The following year she completed her studies at Bethany and began teaching high school English.
Ralph and Marilyn were married on August 8, 1948 at Roanoke Baptist Church in Kansas City. The wedding was officiated by Rev. William McElreath, the husband of Ralph’s cousin, and Marilyn wore a dress made from a Japanese silk parachute that Ralph had sent home from Japan. Ralph and Marilyn moved to Newton, Kansas where their 4 sons, Art, Ron, Bob, and Gary, were born. For several years in the late 1960s she was a teacher at Northview Opportunity Center, a school for special needs children. In the 1970s she was a teacher at Berean Academy. She later also taught at Newton Bible Christian School for several years, and was a CASA volunteer. She and Ralph were married 55 years before his death on October 12, 2003.
In July of 2005 she married Bob Snyder at Newton Bible Church. Combined they had 9 children, 26 grandchildren, and great grandchildren kept coming. They enjoyed traveling together, and she always enjoyed getting together with family. In September of 2022 they moved to Paramount Assisted Living. Bob preceded her in death on July 30 2024.
Marilyn was preceded in death by her parents, her 2 husbands, and her brother John Fredman of Dallas. She is survived by her 4 sons, Art (Barbara) of Hutchinson, Ron (Emily) of Moundridge, Bob (Martha) of Paola, and Gary (Bonnie) of Newton, 13 grandchildren and 24 great grandchildren.
Visitation will be April 21 2025 from 5:00 - 8:00 p.m. at Broadway Colonial funeral home in Newton, Kansas. A memorial service will be held at Newton Bible Church in Newton, Kansas on April 22, 2025 at 4:00 p.m.
Memorials may be given in her honor to the Newton Bible Church Missions fund in care of Broadway Colonial funeral home.
