Martha S. McCloud

Martha S. McCloud, 92, of Newton, died Saturday (March 5, 2011) at the Presbyterian Manor in Newton.

She, the daughter of Henry S. and Sarah Flaming Schroeder, was born on December 2, 1918 in Hillsboro, Kansas (the first baby born in the Salem Hospital). Martha was raised on a farm South of Hillsboro, moving with her family to Newton when she was a small child. She graduated from Newton High School in 1937.

Martha married Leason H. “Pete” McCloud on July 4, 1942 in Salina, Ks. While Pete served in the U.S. Air Force, Martha traveled with him. After Pete was discharged from the military they returned to Newton. Pete began to work for Continental Air Lines which would have the McCloud’s living in Hutchinson, Dodge City, Chicago and Wichita. After retiring, Pete and Martha moved to Marion, Kansas where they lived for 28 years until returning to Newton five years ago.

Survivors include her husband, Leason “Pete” McCloud of Newton; one son Michael McCloud and his wife Cecilia of Aplington, Iowa; one daughter Joan McCloud of Kansasville, Wisc.; one brother Arlo Schroeder of Valley Center, Ks.; four grandchildren Tim McCloud, Peter McCloud, Hannah Pothoven and Jennifer Johnson; and six great grandchildren.

Martha is preceded in death by her parents; son Timothy McCloud; brothers Menno, Pete and Leonard Schroeder; and sisters Freida Franz, Hilda Evans and Augusta Penner.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M., Wednesday (March 9, 2011) at the Immanuel Baptist Church in Newton. Interment will be in the Greenwood Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home Tuesday 1pm til 8pm where the family will receive friends between 7 and 8pm.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established with the Strassburg Baptist Church of Marion, Ks. and the Chapel of Presbyterian Manor, contributions may be sent to Broadway Colonial Funeral Home.
