Martha Smith, 80, died Thursday (February 10, 2022) at her home in Newton, Ks.
She was born on March 17, 1941 in Pennsylvania, the daughter of William and Lizzie Miller Hochstedler. Martha was raised in an Amish family, later branching out on her own path.
Martha married Glenn Kaye Smith in Las Vegas. They lived in the Whitewater, Kansas area until moving to Newton in 1998. Glenn died on May 18, 2012.
She attended Nursing School in Wichita to become an L.P.N., graduating in 1964. For 50 years, Martha worked doing in home care for the disabled and also worked at Wesley Medical Center and Kansas Christian Home.
She enjoyed fishing and was an avid Bingo player and was actively involved with the American Legion’s Bingo night.
Survivors include her daughter Martha Sue Haviland and husband David of Whitewater; son Shawn Pedigo and wife Robin of Newton; brother Lester Hochstedler of Oklahoma; sister Katie Ropp of Oklahoma; along with several grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Martha is preceded in death by her parents; husband; and sister Lena.
Memorial services will be held at 2:00 P.M., Saturday (March 5, 2022) at the Broadway Colonial Funeral Home. Private family inurnment will take place at Restlawn Garden of Memories.
