Mary Jean Wells

Mary Jean Wells passed away peacefully on October 10, 2017 in the presence of family.

Mary Jean was born on January 24, 1928 in Newton, Kansas, and lived her entire life in the Newton and Wichita area.

Her husband, Donald Bradford Wells; a son, Gordon Hubbell Wells; two grandsons; and a great grandson preceded her in death.

She is survived by three of her four children including Lyndon Oliver Wells and wife Marty of Wichita, Anne Wells Wright of Overland Park, Kansas, Susan Wells Aniello and husband Tom of Firestone, Colorado; nine grandchildren; and 10 great grandchildren, all of whom referred to her as “Duck”.

Mary Jean grew up in Newton, Kansas, attended MacMurray College in Jacksonville, Illinois and graduated from the University of Kansas in 1950. She and Brad made their home in Newton for 46 years until Brad’s passing in 1996. In 2002, Mary Jean moved to Larksfield Place in Wichita where she lived until her death.

Mary Jean was a wonderful wife and mother to her four children serving as a volunteer leader at school events, scout activities and other events surrounding her children. She remained an avid Jayhawk fan throughout her life. She was a life-long member of St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church in Newton and served the church in many roles. She was a talented seamstress and a great cook along with many other talents.

A memorial service for Mary Jean will be held at 2:00 P.M., Saturday (October 14, 2017) at St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church in Newton. Private family committal services will precede at Greenwood Cemetery in Newton.

Mary Jean’s family is grateful to the wonderful staff at Larksfield Place in Wichita that saw to her continued care and to the staff of Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice who added additional care for her in recent weeks.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established with the Wells Community Endowment of the Central Kansas Community Foundation in Newton. Contributions may be sent to Broadway Colonial Funeral Home, 120 East Broadway, Newton, Ks. 67114.
