Mary Z. Parks

Mary Z. Parks, 84, of Newton, died Sunday (September 9, 2012) at Asbury Park in Newton.

She was born on April 23, 1928 in Hamilton, Kansas, the daughter of Max Henry and Elsie Smith Casto. Mary attended schools in the Hamilton and Eureka area. She married Alvin A. Parks in Eureka.

Alvin’s work took them several places including El Dorado where they lived for several years until the early 1960’s. The Parks’ then moved to Park City and later to Newton in June 1965.

Mary was very active in the Ladies Auxillary of both the American Legion and V.F.W., the Rebecca Lodge and the Senior Center. Her many years of volunteering in Newton led the local B.P.W. naming her Volunteer Woman of the Year.

Mary is survived by her son Van C. Parks and her daughter Brenda “Wendy” Harms both of Newton; brothers Andre L. Casto of Des Moines, Iowa and Elmo Casto of Fayetteville, Ark., sisters Elva Kinglsey of El Dorado, Ks., and Elsie Mae Ross of Newton; and eight grandchildren Daniel L. Parks, Terry L. Parks, Michelle Miller-Herman, Travis C. Harms, Rory B. Harms, Jacob V. Parks, Jeremy B. Parks, and Jordan R. Parks.

She is preceded in death by her parents; husband Alvin; one son Ophie Lee Parks; grandson Joel Lee Parks, two brothers; sisters Arvada Barnes Legleiter and Maxine Palmer; and an infant sister.

Memorial services will be held at 7:00 P.M., Wednesday (Sept. 12, 2012) at the Broadway Colonial Funeral Home.

A memorial has been established with the Newton Senior Center, contributions may be sent to Broadway Colonial Funeral Home, 120 E. Broadway, Newton, Ks. 67114.
