Melvin L. Bartel

Melvin L. Bartel, 79, of North Newton, died Thursday (Aug. 13, 2009) at the Kidron Bethel Village in North Newton.

Melvin was born on March 12, 1930 in Hillsboro, Kansas, the son of Albert C. and Rosina Gaeddert Bartel. He was a Bethel College campus kid, graduating from Newton High School in 1952.

Melvin helped with the building of the Bethel College Library and Goering Hall. For 20 years, Melvin had worked at the Mennonite Press. He also operated his own lawn service and was assistant custodian at Bethel College Mennonite Church for 13 years.

He was lifetime member of Bethel College Mennonite Church and also a member of the Harvey County Historical Society.

He is survived by one brother Lewis Clark Bartel and his wife Darlene of Albuquerque, N.M.; two sisters Thelma May Bartel of North Newton, Ks. and Ruth Ann Giggy of Panhandle, Tx.; nieces Cynthia Reneau and husband Willie of Tomball, Tx., Jill Elizabeth Bartel of Albuquerque, N.M.; nephews Hugh Kenneth Giggy and his wife Terry of Edmond, Okla., David Clark Bartel and his wife Becky of Houston, Tx.; grandnephews Todd Christopher Giggy, Patrick Lynn Giggy, and Kenneth Windell Reneau.

He is preceded in death by his parents.

Inurnment services will be held at 9:30 A.M., Saturday, September 5, 2009.

Memorial services will be held at 10:30 A.M., Saturday, September 5, 2009, both at the Bethel College Mennonite Church in North Newton.

There will be no viewing or visitation as cremation has been effected.

A memorial has been established with Bethel College Mennonite Church, contributions may be sent to Broadway Colonial Funeral Home, 120 E. Broadway, Newton, Ks. 67114
