Mona R. Abney, 59, went to be with the Lord on July 14, 2015. She entered this world on June 11, 1956 to her parents Pat (Kelly) and Orville Jones.
Mona was born in Sterling, Kansas, and raised in Newton, Kansas. She graduated from Newton High School and later in life went on to achieve her real estate license.
Mona was known by many people and knew no strangers. She had a smile that would brighten the room when she entered. Her love for the ranch and country led her to meeting Robert Abney.
On May 2, 1981, Robert and Mona were united in marriage in rural Newton, Kansas. In this marriage, three children were born, Morgan, Cody and Brandon.
For over 35 years, Mona’s life revolved around her family, and her love of horses and dogs. Mona was active at a young age with her horses, and developed a love for competing in barrel racing. She and Robert introduced their children and grandchildren to the rodeo life. Mona was that special “rodeo mom.” Being active in the rodeos she was able to travel frequently with Robert and their kids.
Mona has worked in various venues as a business professional and was the administrative support for their own business.
Mona worked for G.L.C Real Estate Services and was a member of the Wichita Area Association of Realtors.
Mona held a membership with the NewSpring Church in Wichita, Kansas.
Preceding her in death is her father, Orville; brother, Bryan L. Jones; sister, Darla Nikkel.
Survivors include her husband Robert, Newton; mother Pat, Newton; daughter and husband, Morgan and Matt Schwabauer, children Caden and Kendall, Newton; two sons, Cody and wife Kelsea, Newton and Brandon Abney, Enid, OK.
Nephew, Ryan Nikkel and Wife Megan, Canton, KS; niece’s Kylee Nikkel, Wichita, KS and Kasey Sprouse, Hutchinson, KS
Visitation will be at Broadway Colonial Funeral Home on Sunday, July 19, 2015 from 1:00 to 8:00 P.M. with the family greeting from 4:00 – 7:00 P.M.
The casket will be open for viewing on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday at the funeral home from 8:00 A.M.-5:00 P.M.
Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, July 23, 2015 at 1:00 P.M. at the New Spring Church, 12200 E 21st. St. N., Wichita, Kansas.
The burial will be held at Greenwood Cemetery at 3:00 P.M. following the service. There will be no processional from the church to the cemetery.
