Shelton Bartley

Shelton (Red) Benjamin Bartley, 93, of Newton Kansas passed away Friday, October 1, 2021.

Red was born on March 14, 1928 in Arkansas City, Kansas to Albert L. Bartley and Mary Lue Sparks Bartley. He attended school in Caney, KS and joined the Army on October 18, 1950. Red served his country honorably, awarded the bronze star in the Korean War.

After his service in the Army, he returned home to Caney, KS where he met the love of his life, Pauline White Bartley. They were married on July 31, 1954 in Sedan, KS. She preceded him in death on November 9, 2011.

After having their three children; Laura, Jannett and Michael they moved to Richmond, California where Red worked in the ship yards and attended school to become a jet mechanic. After moving back to Newton to be close to Pauline’s family, Red worked in the mobile home industry and retired after 18 years from Hesston Corp/Hay Forage in 1993. After retirement Red and Pauline move to Joplin, MO to be close to family. They loved living in Joplin and moved back to Newton in 2011 after their daughter Jannett died and Pauline’s declining health.

Earlier years were enjoyed with family gatherings, singing, playing guitar, playing cards and bowling. Red was always available to help friends and family with their projects from remolding a home to auto repairs. Many years were spent camping in Branson, MO. After retirement they enjoyed their time in McAllen, TX in their RV.

Red was known as the sweetest and kindest man with a great sense of humor. Family was important and he looked forward to spending time with his loving family and many friends.

He is survived by his daughter, Laura Wolfe and husband Harry of Newton, son Michael of Columbus, KS, son-in-law Randy Schimdt and wife Vickie of Sarcoxie, MO and grandson Jason Schmidt of Carthage, MO. sister-in-laws, Vivian Bartley of Newton, KS and Marva White Caney, KS and many nieces and nephews.

Red is preceded in death by his parents; wife Pauline; daughter Jannett Schmidt, sisters; Earmel Carver. Lavonne Rutledge (Gerald “Newt”) and Edna Taylor (Lorren), brothers; Nolen (Mildred), Delbert (Yvonne) and Albert Bartley.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Tuesday (October 5, 2021) at the Broadway Colonial Funeral Home. Interment will be in the Greenwood Cemetery in Newton.

The casket will be open at the funeral home on Monday between 1:00 P.M. and 8:00 P.M., where the family will receive friends between 6:00 and 7:00 P.M.

A memorial has been established with St. Jude’s Children Hospital.  Contributions may be sent to Broadway Colonial Funeral Home.
