Stephen L. “Steve” Schmidt, 66, died Friday (January 24, 2014) at the Wesley Medical Center in Wichita.
He was born on January 8, 1948 in Hutchinson, Ks., the son of LaVern Leo and Audrey Nelson Schmidt. He was raised in Hutchinson, the family later moved to Wichita where Steve attended West High School. Steve married Sandra Sue Saylor on February 26, 1966 at the Harry Street Church of God in Wichita. They had lived in Haysville for 38 years.
As a teenager, Steve went to work for the Wichita Beacon Newspaper, which would later merge to become The Wichita Eagle. He was a pressman for over 40 years until his retirement.
Steve became involved with Prison Ministries in 2005, traveling to El Dorado and Hutchinson until 2011. He also coached for the Haysville Junior Football League for 23 years.
Survivors include his wife Sandy; son Josh and wife Megan; grandchildren Gibson Reed Schmidt and Savanna Dawn Schmidt all of Haysville; brothers Jim (Tona) Schmidt of Ponca City, Okla., and Tracy Schmidt of California; sister Gayla (Jesse) Fisher of Arkansas City.
Steve is preceded in death by his parent and sister Trudy.
Funeral services will be held at 4:00 P.M., Tuesday (January 28, 2014) at the Believers Tabernacle, 2000 S. Hillside, Wichita. Private family inurnment will take place at a later date.
Visitation with the family will be Monday evening between 6 and 8, also at the church.
