Velma Schmidt, 86, of Newton, died Sunday (Jan. 3, 2010) at the Wesley Rehabilitation Hospital in Wichita, Ks.
She was born on January 27, 1923 in Lehigh, Ks., the daughter of Bernard and Sarah Kroeker Friesen. Velma married Willard Schmidt on June 6, 1942 at the Lehigh Mennonite Church.
Velma was affiliated with the Faith Mennonite Church in Newton. She will be very much missed and loved and remain forever in our hearts!
Survivors include her husband Willard of the home; son Larry Schmidt and wife Renee; daughter Janice Kessler and husband Shawn; sister Rosella Bolen all of Newton; five grandchildren Danny, Jeannie, Carrie and her fiancé Nate, Jessica, and Sam; and a grandson-in-law Jimmy; and 12 great grandchildren.
Velma is preceded in death by her parents; one son Eugene W. Schmidt; two daughters Donna Sue Schmidt and Darlene Griffin; four brothers Irvin, Art, Leonard, and Johnny Friesen; two sisters Lena Jantzen and Elvera Alexander; three grandchildren April D. Smith, Elisa Sue Schmidt, and Michael Schmidt.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M., Thursday (Jan. 7, 2010) at the Faith Mennonite Church in Newton. Interment will be in the Greenwood Cemetery in
Newton.
Friends may call at the funeral home Wednesday 1:00 P.M. til 8:00 P.M., where the family will receive friends between 6:30 P.M. and 8:00 P.M.
