Virgil Lester McClure

Virgil Lester McClure, born December 29, 1917, the son of Lester and Leto Miller McClure, Walton, Ks. Died July 8 2010,

Virgil was a resident of Schowalter Villa, Hesston, KS.

He was a graduate of Walton High School, Walton, KS. Virgil was a sheep industry leader, champion sheep shearer, a life long farmer and community leader.

He served as President of the Mid-West Wool Growers Cooperative. He was President and a founding member of the Kansas Purebred Sheep Association and later the Kansas Purebred Sheep Committee.

He was also President of the Kansas Sheep Association and served as a delegate to the American Sheep Industry Association.

Locally he was President of the Harvey County Fair Board, Director of the Golden Plains School Board and served on the Zimmerdale School Board.

He was a community leader for the Hesston Union Champions 4-H Club.

Virgil was nationally recognized for producing and showing purebred Hampshire, Shropshire, and Southdown sheep. He judged numerous national, state, and local sheep shows.

On December 18, 1940 he and Faye Dillman were married at her parents rural Hesston, Ks. home.

He is survived by three sons; Duane McClure and wife Mary Ann, Dighton, KS; Don McClure and wife Rhonda Wahoo NE; and Alex McClure, South Hutchinson, KS.

Other survivors include his four grand children; Rhett McClure and Renee; Ryan McClure and Angie; Allyn McClure Fujan and Chris, all of Lincoln, NE. and Matt McClure of Hays, KS. and one great grandson Braydon Fujan of Lincoln NE.

He is also survived by one brother, Maurice, Phillipsburg, KS. and three sisters; Janice Capps, Tolleson AZ; Betty Lou Smith, Newton, KS; and Joyce DuFriend, Newton, KS; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, two infant daughters, Delores Ann and Maribeth, two brothers, Clayton and Marvin, and three sisters, Viola Gillmore, Thelma Minard, and Theda Merritt.

Funeral Services will be held on Monday, July 12, 2010 at 10:30 A.M. at the Walton United Methodist Church, Walton, Kansas.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Sunday 1pm til 9pm where the family will receive friends 5-7.

A memorial has been established with the Walton United Methodist Church, contributions may be sent to Broadway Colonial Funeral Home.
