Walter G. Liggett, 82, of Newton, died Thursday (May 14, 2009) at his home.
He was born on January 9, 1927 in Elbing, Kansas, the son of Grandville Aikman and Silvia Jane Landreth Liggett.
Walter married Doris Mae Haas on June 23, 1951 in Marion, Kansas. They lived in Marion for a short time before moving to Newton. Due to Walter’s work in the oilfields they lived in several places, before moving to Canton where they lived for nearly 12 years returning to Newton in 1975.
Walter had been an assembler at the Hay & Forage in Hesston for 33 years until he retired in 1992. He was a member of Grace Community Church in Newton. Walter was an avid hunter and enjoyed fishing with his grandson Garrett.
Suvivors include his wife Doris of the home; one son George A. Liggett; and one daughter Linette R. Martin both of Newton; one brother Otis Liggett of Waverly, Ks.; three sisters Esther Bowen of Goessel, Ruby Glastetter of Chaffee, Mo., and Ruth McDowell of Newton; four grandchildren Garrett Martin, Lauren Martin, Justin Martin and LaKrista Liggett.
Walter is preceded in death by his parents; five brothers Elmer, James, Ralph, Robert, and William; and one sister Grace Lyons.
Funeral services will be held at 3:00 P.M., Monday (May 18, 2009) at Grace Community Church in Newton. Interment will be in the Whitewater Center Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home Sunday 1pm til 8pm where they family will receive friends between 5pm and 7pm.
