Wendy J. Goerzen, 49, of rural Newton, died Monday (March 21, 2011).
She was born on December 27, 1961 in Newton, the daughter of Clayton and Virginia Williamson Harms. Wendy graduated from Remmington High School in 1980 and later received a Secretarial Degree from Bethel College.
She married Bryan Goerzen on September 2, 1984 at Koerner Heights Church of the Mennonite Brethren in Newton. They were members of the Tabor Mennonite Church.
Wendy had worked at K.G. & E. in Newton, then began a 13 year career as an Administrative Assistant at Hesston College where she started out in the Aviation Dept., at the airport then transferred to the main campus to the Student Life Dept. Wendy then worked a short time as an Administrative Assistant at Sunset Elementary School in Newton; and for the past year was the Marketing Director for Advance Physical Therapy in Newton.
Wendy was an avid runner, competing in many local races and was thrilled to participate in the Boston Marathon in 2001. She enjoyed sports very much, and began coaching her daughter’s “Biddy Ball” team and later was the Jr. High Girls Basketball coach in Goessel for a few years. The family enjoyed many trips that included both water and snow skiing.
Survivors include her husband, Bryan of the home; two sons Sheldon Goerzen of Wichita and Hayden Goerzen of the home; one daughter Brittany Goerzen of Wichita; her parents Clayton and Virginia Harms of North Newton; one brother Lonnie Harms and wife Sandra of Wisconsin; three sisters Diane Meyers and husband Ron of Moore, Okla., Lynette Koetting and husband John of Newton; Jennifer Martinez and husband John of Wichita; and eight nieces and nephews
Services will be held at 10:30 A.M., Saturday (March 26, 2010) at the Tabor Mennonite Church, rural Newton. Private family urnment will be held later.
The casket will be open for friends at the funeral home Friday 9am til 9pm where the family will receive friends between 7 til 9pm.
A memorial has been established with Wichita Area Sexual Assault Center or Tabor Mennonite Church, contributions may be sent to Broadway Colonial Funeral Home, 120 E. Broadway, Newton, Ks. 67114.
